Sciatica Pain, Finding Pain Relief

There are many ways of dealing with the pain of sciatica. These involve the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, over-the-counter pain killers, prescription medication, exercise and even surgical procedures. All you know when you have excruciating pain that is running up and down your legs and back is that you want the pain to stop right now.

If the form of sciatica experienced is mild enough it can usually be dealt with something as simple as aspirin or ibuprofen. As the pain gradient increases non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs may need to be prescribed to bring relief from lower back pain. Next come stronger pain reducing medication like codein. The use of codein brings up another problem, being that these medications are addictive. They should not be taken unless absolutely necessary. Muscle relaxers can also be prescribed to help bring relief. They, howeveer, make you drowsy and put your and others at least especially if you need to be driving. Next of course would be surgery, this should only be considered as a last resort.

In many cases exercise is one of your best options. It can bring about relief for a long time. Exercise works by training your muscles to relax, it also strengthens them. By doing this you help take the pressure off the sciatic nerve which runs through these muscles. When they are tense they compress the sciatic nerve and thus you feel pain. You want them relaxed and strong. When all options have been exhausted, there is of course surgery. One such procedure called a microdisectomy involves physically removing whatever is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve. This is usually done when herniated discs are the cause of the pain.

Another surgical procedure called a lumbar laminectomy can be performed in the cases of spinal stenosis. In this condition the sciatica symptoms and pain are caused by nerve compression. In this surgical procedure bones are removed from the vertebra in an effort to give more space to the nerve bundles that are located inside the spinal column.

One surgery that has been employed in very many cases is a diskectomy. Here the diseased disc that is causing the problem is physically removed from the spinal column. Now with the pressure on the nerve reduced, the symptoms and pain associated with the sciatica are relieved.

One of the last resorts for people who suffer from sciatica is spinal fusion. It is a last resort because once it is performed the person is left with very little movement in their spinal column. In the procedure the surgeon will join two or more vertebra together. This works by relieving irritation and compression in the spine. It is usually performed in cases where osteoporosis is present and where the spinal column has suffered from some form of physical injury.

It is best to talk with a qualified medical professional to determine the options that are suited for your particular situation. Everyone is different, what works in some cases may nor work in others. You need to find that option to bring you pain relief for your sciatica pain.
